As Managing Director of Comptoir Balland-Brugneaux (CBB), Emmanuel has helped lead one of the world’s long-established independent coal trading companies. Founded in Geneva, CBB has supplied steam coal, metallurgical coal, and metallurgical coke to power producers, steel manufacturers, cement companies, and industrial customers throughout the world. Under his leadership, the company expanded internationally, including pioneering its entry into the Indian coal market following market liberalization in the early 1990s. Today, CBB continues to serve customers across multiple continents through an extensive international trading network.

Throughout his career, Emmanuel has developed expertise that extends well beyond commodity trading. His experience encompasses fuel procurement, international logistics, shipping, contract negotiation, quality control, supply chain management, commercial risk management, and long-term strategic relationships throughout the global energy industry. This broad perspective allows him to understand not only how fuel markets function but also how they influence power generation, industrial operations, and energy security.

Emmanuel has long been recognized for his contributions to the energy sector. He was repeatedly appointed by successive United States Secretaries of Energy to serve on the National Coal Council, where he contributed to studies examining the future of coal, energy security, clean coal technologies, and the role of coal within the broader U.S. energy strategy. These appointments reflected decades of industry experience and provided opportunities to contribute to discussions involving utilities, mining companies, equipment manufacturers, transportation providers, and government agencies.

He was also appointed by the Prime Minister of France as a Conseiller du Commerce Extérieur de la France (CCEF), advising on international trade and supporting the expansion of French companies into global markets. In addition, he has served on the Board of the Coal Exporters Association, contributing to industry discussions involving international coal exports, transportation infrastructure, and global trade policy.

Before joining CBB, Emmanuel held senior leadership positions within the French coal industry, including leadership roles with THION and SOCCRAM, where he gained extensive operational experience in coal distribution, district heating, and industrial energy systems. These early roles provided firsthand exposure to the practical realities of supplying reliable energy to municipalities, industrial facilities, universities, airports, and other large energy consumers.

In recent years, Emmanuel has continued to advise and support the development of new energy initiatives beyond traditional fuel markets. Through Comptoir Balland-Brugneaux (CBB), he has supported the development of Riverview Energy Corporation and FlexOnyx, helping sponsor and advise projects focused on advanced recycling, resource recovery, and the conversion of waste plastics into transportation fuels and petrochemical feedstocks. His involvement reflects a longstanding belief that innovation, resource efficiency, and practical infrastructure solutions will all play important roles in the future evolution of global energy systems.

While the global energy sector continues to diversify through renewables, natural gas, nuclear energy, engineered fuels, and advanced recycling technologies, Emmanuel believes that reliable fuel supply chains remain fundamental to energy security.
